What is Jizai
Jizai (自在) is Japanese for freedom and ease: doing things your own way, without strings. Jizai is an app for self-employed music teachers and musicians (freelancers) in the Netherlands. Everything that comes with teaching and playing – schedule, invoices, expenses, VAT – lives in one place, so there is more time left for the music.
Jizai was born from my own need: as a freelance music teacher I was looking for one app that fit the way we work – lessons at different schools, concerts, one-off jobs – and I couldn’t find it. So I built it, first for myself and now for colleagues in the same situation.
- Schedule and lessons: a weekly timetable that creates the lessons for you, with make-up lessons, absences and lesson packages.
- Invoices: monthly or per lesson, with online payment (iDEAL), reminders and credit notes.
- Expenses and VAT: photograph receipts and have them read automatically, reconcile bank statements, prepare the VAT return and the yearly figures, and keep a mileage log.
- Concerts and projects: gigs with fee and travel costs, and hours for clients.
- Family portal: parents and students see the schedule, report an absence, view and pay their invoices and add the lessons to their own calendar.
- Trial lessons: a page of your own where new students book a trial lesson or a meeting in free slots.
- Automatic: lessons from the timetable, draft invoices, payment reminders, reading receipts and the link with your calendar. Invoices are never sent without your check.
The app is now in a test phase, used by a small group by invitation.
Who is responsible
For the data of students and parents, the teacher using Jizai is the controller; Jizai only processes that data on the teacher’s behalf. For teachers’ own accounts, Jizai is responsible.
What data
Teachers: name, email, business details (KvK, VAT number, IBAN, address), invoices, expenses and receipts, business kilometres.
Students and parents: name, contact details, lesson schedule and attendance, invoices and payments, and what you fill in when requesting a trial lesson (such as age or level).
What for
Only to make the app work: planning lessons, making and sending invoices, processing payments, preparing the VAT return and signing in. We don’t sell data, show ads or use tracking or advertising cookies.
The legal basis is performing the agreement (the lessons or the service) and the legal duty to keep business records.
Who we share data with
Services Jizai needs, each under a data processing agreement: Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (hosting), Resend (email), Mollie (online payments). If the teacher turns them on: Anthropic (reading the teacher’s receipts and documents) and Google Calendar (the schedule in the teacher’s calendar).
How long
Invoices and the records that go with them are kept for 7 years, as Dutch tax law requires. Other data is removed by the teacher when no longer needed, or by us when the account ends.
Cookies
Only the cookies needed to keep you signed in and remember your language and settings.
Your rights
You can see, correct or delete your data, and object. Students and parents are best helped by their teacher; you can also email us. If you disagree with us, you can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
